“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – Barack Obama
The conversation goes like this:
“What do you want to eat.”
“I don’t care, just pick something.”
“Okay, I will order pizza.”
“No, I don’t feel like pizza.”
“Alright, Chinese it is”
“No problem, I think the Thai place delivers.”
“Fine, I’ll make tacos.”
“Then what do you want to eat?”
“I told you, I don’t care.”
Can you relate to this type of conversation?
You are hungry.
You want to change something about your job.
You want to change something about your life.
You want to be happy.
And each time someone gives you a suggestion to change your situation, you feel that you don’t like it.
The most famous advice on changing your life
You’ve probably already heard it many times before that the secret to actually creating change in your life is: Taking Action.
Taking action is important, but sometimes it is not the first thing you should do to create change.
Most of the time, you need to do the exact opposite to create lasting change in your life.
You need to SLOW DOWN or PAUSE!
You need to spend more time in solitude.
You need to PAUSE for a moment and figure out what it is that you want to do.
Otherwise, you’ll get yourself into the type of conversation you’ve seen above.
Don’t pretend that you don’t care and stop faking happiness.
If you don’t like something about your life …
If you’re living in pain every day …
If you feel that there is a better way to live …
Then you must pause to figure out your purpose in life and what it is that you want to do and who you want to become.
Taking action comes later when you’re clear about your direction and purpose. Taking action in the wrong direction will make things worse.
The more clear you are, the easier you can create a change in your life.
Here are a few insights to help you gain clarity:
1. Slow down
“Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you.” – John De Paola
When you slow down you can see better. And when you see better, you can notice and seize more opportunities.
“All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.” – Blaise Pascal
Spend more quality and quiet time with yourself. The distractions and busyness of your daily life make it impossible to clarify and resolve life’s most complicated issues.
“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” – Hans Hofmann
Eliminate the noise and clutter in your life to find space for joy and peace. Your heart’s voice can’t be heard in the middle of a cluttered life.
“I experience a period of frightening clarity in those moments when nature is so beautiful.” – Vincent Van Gogh
Connect with nature. Spend more time enjoying the beauty of nature. This will open your mind and clean your thoughts. Nature breeds clarity.
“To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it!” – Charlie Chaplin
Play with your pain and hunger.
Laugh at it with unshakable confidence that tomorrow holds something that’s much better for you. When you laugh, you put yourself in a mood or status of clarity and gratefulness.
Before taking random actions to change your life, pause to figure out what you want to do and who you want to become. Clarity makes the change process much easier.
Remember, the secret to creating change is pausing before taking action.
