Are you an empath? Do you even know what an empath is? Have you been told that you are just too darn sensitive? You are probably an empath.
Being an empath is both a blessing and a curse. Most people who are empaths don’t even know it. They just think they are plain weird and way too sensitive as they have been told over and over. This really sucks because the word empath when describing a person is virtually unknown to most.
Toughen up, and be a man is what most empaths hear; much to their detriment.
The best healers in the world are empaths. Having the ability to feel other people’s energy allows them to get to the root of the problem. The challenge for many sensitive types is they don’t know how to close the energy field around their body. The energy field is called an aura. An aura is a subtle energy field that cocoons around the body. It’s job is to protect you from negative energy and energy overload. (Think kids birthday party).
We do have the ability to open and close the aura at will. For example when you make love to your partner or spouse ideally you would open your aura to connect the energy of both of you into one. This makes for great sex by the way.
Same goes with any type of loving connection with another. It doesn’t have to be physical intimacy; it could also be “heart based love” like you have for your children or for your pet. If you aura is closed than you would not be able to make the special heart based loving feeling with another.
The same goes if someone is angry with you. The last thing you would want to do is leave your auric field open and let all that hostility go to your heart. Sometimes it’s good to have an open aura and other times it is not wise to do so.
The problem that empaths face is that they either forget to close their aura’s or they are so sensitive they can still feel the energy of a person or room even when their aura is closed. Many empaths are labeled overly-emotional or crazy because they seem to get caught up in the emotions that are all around them.
It becomes overwhelming for them and they often don’t know where their energy ends and someone else begins. Or the energy of other people intertwines with their own and they start to feel like they are going “schizo” which they of course they are not.
There are many tools and programs available for empath self-defense.
One tool that I just learned for closing my energy field is called: The Hand Mudra. The hand mudra is a simple hand gesture that goes like this. Basically all you are going to do is put the tips of your thumbs together and the tips of your index fingers together and make a triangle or pyramid. This will help to seal off your energy field.
If you are sitting down you can also cross your ankles to seal in your own energy.
Energy protection is important for everyone and not only empaths. The truth is that not everyone is as kind and nice as you so you need to do what you can to seal off your energy; especially in crowded places.
The zip technique – There is a meridian line that goes from the pubic bone up to the bottom lip. Keeping it zipped – do this mentally - will keep you refreshed and strong, leaving it unzipped will leave all your energy centers (chakras) vulnerable to wounds and psychic (energy) attacks.
Cleanse your aura – This one is fun and simple to do. Take an epsom salt bath for twenty minutes at least once a week. This will remove all negative residue lingering in your aura.
Crystals – Yes, even you guys too. The recommended crystal for empaths is Rose Quartz because it’s strong, steady, and soothes your emotions. You can wear it as a piece of jewelery or just carry it around in your pocket.
Guided meditations or Brainwave Entrainment programs – If you can meditate easily good for you. I found meditation difficult until I began listening to the BrainEv system for almost two months now and meditating is as easy as putting on a pair of headphones, kicking back and listening to the thirty minute program. You can try a free demo here.
Breathing techniques – We take breathing for granted but when we get overwhelmed by emotion (energy) we may begin to breathe shallow, or even worse, hold our breath. Taking just thirty seconds to do some deep and deliberate breathing will help you to feel balanced and centers again.
Drink lots of fresh clean water – This one should seem like a “no brainer” by now, but remember to keep your body hydrated. A hydrated body will create a hydrated mind and auric field, an empaths best survival tools.
Process your emotions – This means feeling them through so that you can release them. Empaths generally like to put off feeling their feelings later when they are alone. Just remember that you are feeling and processing your feelings everyday.
Empaths are notorious for being ungrounded. I wrote a post about grounding yourself here so please be sure to check it out too.
Dr. Michael Smith, who is also an empath, has created an amazing program that is geared to helping people who are extremely sensitive. Please check out the Complete Empath Toolkit (aff link) to invest in your well-being.
