Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success

Be accountable for your own career and take charge of your life.” – Dan Schawbel

My online friend Dan Schawbel contacted me a few months ago to let me know his latest book – Promote Yourself: The New Rules for Career Success would be coming out in September 2013.

He asked me to take a look at it and perhaps let my readers know about it as well.

I said, “sure, no problem Dan.”

As much as I love personal growth, spirituality, and paranormal topics, business has always been a top priority of mine.

Back during my school days, my favorite subjects were marketing and economics.

Why?

Because I knew, even way back then that money, business and contribution is what makes our “human world” go around.

My Take on Branding and Business

When it comes to business, you need to act like you are your business. It doesn’t matter if you are an employee or an entrepreneur – You Are Your Business.

Many of you know my blog is primarily about personal growth, but I do occasionally write about business.

It’s no secret that in order to get the things you want and need in life you need to have money to pay for it.

The only way to get the money you really want is by acting like a professional at all times and make yourself indispensable.

No one wants to pay someone “top dollar” if they act like they don’t want to work.

You have to remember, you are your brand always. No matter where you are, no matter whom you are with.

You have to ask yourself these key questions when it comes to you and your personal brand.

  • What makes me unique?
  • What strengths do I have?
  • Are my strengths being underutilized? If so, why, and what can I do about it?
  • What value can I bring?
  • What are my skills?
  • Am I concerned about my reputation?
  • Am I flexible enough to change?
  • What does my job require me to be good at?
  • Which weaknesses do I need to focus on in order to improve at work?

In this day and age having one job that is linear is not enough. Linear income means you only get paid when you work, and when you aren’t working, you don’t get paid.

This is why I always recommend to my friends and family to look into earning money online as well as teaming up with a network marketing company.

Why?

Because these types of income opportunities are completely passive. You may only have to do work one time, yet you can continue to get paid for it again and again (residual).

The days of working at a company for 20 years with no worries about job security and retiring with a nice pension are long gone. And so is loyalty to one’s employer.

Today, the trend is towards collaborative environments and hiring people who can work independently.

The message here is pretty simple: The skills you have right now might not be relevant tomorrow. So you’d better get trained for the skills you need while enhancing the ones you already have

In his book, Dan will show you how to communicate your unique contribution, so that you make yourself indispensable. In this competitive world, he will ensure that you highlight your strengths for all to see.
