So, picture this: spiritual growth is like tending to the garden of your soul. It’s about nurturing your inner self, blossoming into the fullest expression of who you are. I did it to feel better energetically, that is all.

The same goes for any other spiritual choices; I only do them to feel better and make myself more valuable in our World.

Where does religion fit in with spirituality?

Religion has more to do with the mind than the spirit. Religion is a great way to soothe the brain’s anxiety, but for me, it can be too restrictive and dependent when taken too far.

That’s why you often hear the phrase; they do things religiously. Also, spirituality is not about never showing emotions, like getting angry or sad; these are normal human emotions and should not be suppressed in the name of being spiritual.

There is nothing spiritual (energy) about suppressing your emotions. Sure, I get angry, upset, and moody, but it’s all just expressions of internal energy, so I don’t make a big stink about it.

Everything, including you and me, is conscious energy at its core. Eating a poor diet, not getting enough rest, being hard on yourself, and speaking negatively about others can negatively affect your energy.

If you want to feel good, then clean up your energy.

Can You Measure Your Spiritual Growth?

If you are a spiritual growth student, you understand becoming more aware and conscious is the key to being more spiritually grounded. Think about it. Life is full of surprises, some wanted and some unwanted. How you respond determines your level of spiritual expansion.

The Buddha’s take was: “How much you suffer when faced with things that made you suffer in the past” – that is a pretty good measure! You know your spiritual progress is working when old situations arise that previously set you off no longer do.

Eckhart Tolle is a great example of someone who is fully present in himself. He’s not stuck in his head ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. He is in “The Now Moment.”

As awareness grows, some people think they’re “getting worse,” so to speak, but they’re simply becoming more conscious of what has already been there for many years.

People often ask me if they are “getting worse” because they can still detect dysfunctional or reactive patterns. It’s not as if those patterns will disappear as awareness grows; you’ll be more aware.

As you become more aware of reactive patterns, you can see them, unlike before you were them. There’s a vast difference between seeing a pattern inside yourself and being the pattern—or being used by it, merging with it, or acting it out totally.

One could say that conditioned patterns—or egoic behaviors—don’t immediately disappear as you become present. They may act out for quite a while, even as presence arises. They have their momentum—especially patterns associated with emotional residues we call “pain-body.”

I love the Buddha’s simple definition of enlightenment as “the end of suffering.” There is nothing superhuman in that, is there? Of course, as a definition, it is incomplete. It only tells you what enlightenment is not: no suffering.

It is a matter of daily practice. In my experience, as soon as I get trapped in stressful situations and skip meditation, the density of my thinking takes over immediately.

Once you get used to the benefit of awareness in the present moment, you will always miss the calm feeling associated with it, which will eventually help you get back on track.

Did you ever watch the original National Lampoons Vacation? Remember, the Griswold family planned a cross-country road trip to their favorite amusement park, Wally World.

In addition to having a horrible experience on their journey, when they arrived at Wally World, it was closed for renovations.

A spiritually grounded person would accept that it was closed; a spiritually ungrounded person would have done what Clark W Griswold did.

A Short Story

The anxious student asked the Zen master how long to enlightenment. The Zen Master answered a long time, at least ten years. The student said, “Well I will work twice as hard.”

The Zen master said, “Then it will take 20 years.” “No!” said the committed student, “I will work three times as hard.” “Well then,” said the Zen master, “it will take 30 years.”

Do you need to work at being spiritual? No. You are already spiritual. Do you need to work at being human? No. That’s just who you are.

The spiritual path doesn’t require us to get anything. It’s a process of opening to new dimensions of our identity, awakening to our truth, and allowing ourselves to be authentic.

If you want to achieve proper spiritual alignment, become true to yourself.
