The Ego Mind and the Higher Mind

| September 23, 2011

We have two minds that we use. The physical mind and the higher mind. The physical mind is the ego or the “little me.”

The ego mind needs to know how everything is going to turn out. It literally can’t stand to  “not know.” Reminds me of the reptilian brain going bongo.

I remember when I had a reading done with Dr Gwen  several years ago and she was telling me that ” I need to get out of my own way.”  At the time I didn’t quite understand what she meant by that, but I do now, and I want to share it with you.

What Dr Gwen was telling me was that the little me or ego mind was getting in the way of what my higher mind was unfolding for me. Sometimes when life appears to be falling apart it is actually falling together.

Many of us will experience times when no matter what we do, it just doesn’t work. This is a big signal telling us to let go and let God. In this case God would be the higher mind.

The higher mind is the part of your consciousness that has already went before you so you must learn to trust it. The higher mind would be like a trail guide that knows the jungle like the back of his hand.

He has traversed the terrain so many times, and has gotten lost and made mistakes along the way, and because of his experiences he would be the one to follow and trust. The same goes for your higher mind.

Now the little mind is not stupid or irrelevant by any stretch of the imagination, and it needs to feel appreciated, coaxed and treated well. What many of us do is place the burden on the ego mind to carry the weight of the world which it is not designed to do.

Do I Really Need To Know This Now

A major challenge for the ego mind is the idea of trusting what is. When the ego mind doesn’t understand what is happening it begins to melt down. The antidote for this is trusting what is, and knowing that you will receive what you need to know exactly when you need to know it.

The ego mind starts looking for answers before a problem has even occurred.

Information is received to the body in this order. From Consciousness, to the higher mind, to the ego mind to the brain to the body. (I wrote a really cool guest- post here about how the body is one giant crystal receiver, so be sure to check it out after you have read this post.)

This is how psychic channelers are able to communicate with beings from other dimensions and how they are able to do a reading with you.

The ego mind is the “gatekeeper” to higher awareness so you must learn to do whatever it takes to get the ego mind to allow in information from the higher mind.

This is where 99% of humanity is stuck at the moment. It’s like higher consciousness is knocking at our door with this really great news but our ego mind says, “nah, can’t come in buddy.”

Don’t worry though there are literally millions to possibly a billion that are close to or have already woken up to their higher mind. The key is to get the ego mind to relax and allow in the information.

Let it know that it is not threatened, it will not die. Tell the ego mind that it is now in partnership with the higher mind.

This will allow the ego mind to loosen up a little and trust the higher mind. It really becomes like a game. A game that you were designed to play and win. Have you ever noticed how after someone has had a couple of drinks that they tend to “loosen” up a little?

It’s the same reason that indigenous tribes would smoke or ingest something to gain spiritual clarity.

This is caused by the ego mind gatekeeper being relaxed and more trusting allowing the flow of information from higher mind to the body receiver. I am not advocating drinking, smoking or ingesting something as an excuse to receive higher awareness though.

You can learn how to commune with the higher mind through proper diet, meditation and breathing exercises.

Remember, the ego mind is fear based because it’s job is to keep you safe and protected. The problem is that the ego mind has gotten soooo fear based that it has double padlocked the door to higher consciousness.

It’s time we remove the padlock and trust. Come on ego mind, you can do it.

How about you? Are you an open receiver to higher consciousness, or have you double padlocked the door shut?

Hi Justin,

I have been looking forward to commenting on your site for quite some time now, but didn't get around to doing it yet.

This is a nice post you have written. I agree with the analogy of there being two minds. I too like to think about our being as two separate entities - one being the self that we think we are and the other being the one whole that we are each a part of.

I had written a post a few years ago titled "Living on the Higher Plane". It complements what you have written here, and is a nice way to be gain a better perspective of life. I don't want to add a link here and appear spammy, but if you run a search on my site with that title, it will show up.

Once again, nice post!

Cheers,
Mark

I have never read about the ego mind and the higher mind, but I totally understand what it is. I feel they both exist and I experience that everyday.

The ego mind represents fear for me. And fear is a warning sign that says "be careful". So it is kinda important, right? Can we really disconnect from the ego mind? I also wonder if its existence is important... If it is is there, it is for a reason, right?

Mouh

Hi, Justin.
If I understood it correctly, if we let go of the ego, we are more open to higher consciousness. But, what happens then with our safety and fear? Fear can also be positive, warning us not to do something and rather trust our instincts.

That is definitely the role of the ego mind to keep us protected from perceived danger.

I had experiences in my life when I was disconnected from the ego mind and no danger ever came to me from it.

It really boils down to trust. Believe me, as long as your are conscious, you will be protected from any threats or danger.

Hi Justin,
I like the perspective from which you addressed this issue. And you did give a perfect example that clarified your point; the drinking and ingestion which compels the ego mind to let go.
While a lot of people will act like they don't care about self consciousness and such discussions, the percentage of people taking these ego-let-go inducers (drinks, drugs etc) is proof enough that every wo/man crave to let go the ego, but the ego mind just wouldn't allow the admittance.
Thanks a sharing this. I enjoyed reading..

Thanks Ikenna. You make an excellent point here. I used to be a drinker even though I quit about 6 years ago.

What got me hooked was that drinking at first allowed me to escape the ego mind and gain a sense of freedom that I never had before.

Unfortunately with drugs or alcohol it takes more and more to achieve the same effect which causes many to experience addiction.

Thanks for commenting. :)

My wife did sew a custom pillow made out of left over t-shirts and some other materials.
I have never saw her so focused. She was so into it that she didn't even realize that 3 hours gone by by the time she finished the creation... And there it was the coolest pillow I've ever seen created by my wife...wait I mean by the infinite intelligence.(Or the higher mind, as you call it)

Hi Akos,
When we get out of our way time flies because we are not trying to control life or worry about things that we have no control over.

It's like writing a post, sometimes it takes me 3 hours to write and publish a post when in reality it feels like there was no time.

Hi Justin,

Powerful post my friend! You touched on several great points, but one of my favorite parts of this post was where you mentioned to, "Tell the ego mind that it is now in partnership with the higher mind."

My door to hearing the higher mind was not only padlocked but under some rather high-tech surveillance as well by my ego. When I knew a change was needed, I truly felt that my ego was giving me the worst time ever, with trying to open my mind up to the change.

Ultimately, I did win, but not without one heck of a round. My ego wanted to know everything there was to know about everything, "why this..." and "how come that..." In the end, I had to learn to trust the higher mind, that it was fully aware of what I was in need of knowing. Today, that's good enough for me.

Really enjoyed the post my friend.

Hey Deeone,
Thanks so much for your kind words my friend. Being an Aries I am primarily dominated by my ego so I feel your pain.

It takes so much effort and negotiation to get the ego mind to just trust and relax.

At least now we know what we are up against.

I know what you mean by the ego mind. I fall into that trap often thinking about all the problems and issues I need to protect myself from. And you are completely correct that it can tend to overwhelm us and actually get in the way.

Sometimes we say that things are falling apart, when in actuality things are falling together.

Bryce

Right on Bryce.

Hi Justin.

Sol the Ego Mind is sad because some people that used to comment on her blog isn't anymore. Sol the Higher Mind realizes that it's time to stop looking for approval from others. Time to stop doing things for others in hope that they do something back. Doing something out of fear rarely yields results.

I want to say 'Amen', so I'll say Amen. Amen.

Hello Sol,
Amen Sol, That little fight or tug of war inside of us is between the ego mind and the higher mind. I would choose the higher mind if I were you.

Justin, this is great info...and a great reminder to me...especially to "trust what is."

I love the sentence you wrote about trusting that what is, is exactly what we need...and we can trust life as it unfolds. I also had an "eureka" moment when you said that the ego mind starts to try to solve problems that do not yet exist.

Just a great reminder to stay firmly planted in the present. Thanks.

Thanks Steve,
You get it my friend. :)

Justin,

I loved this post - the best one you've ever done, IMO. If there was just one thing that could get through to people, just to start the wheels turning and the mind open a bit, this is it.

Thanks Julie, I really appreciate your kind words.I guess that they are getting in their own way.

This is good stuff. I was just thinking recently about how I needed to get out of my own way and let my higher mind fill my potential. Thanks for sharing this.

Hey Vic,
I was also thinking the same way that is why I wrote the post. :)

Seriously though, it's easy to get caught up in life and sometimes we forget to take the time to allow ourselves to reconnect with our higher selves.

I have been very aware of these two minds during this year. Learning to be aware allows me to shift, if not immediately, then at least quickly. Thanks for the clear description and advice.

No Problem Galen. That makes me very happy to hear that you and many others are aware of the two minds.

That is how all progress will be made once we have awareness about it.

Anytime I'm not happy or peaceful I know I'm coming from my ego. It takes constant vigilance to live in a loving and non-judgmental state. Nice post.

True That Tess. There is nothing wrong with the ego but I would definitely recommend taking at least 5 or 10 minutes a day and connect with the higher mind.

Hi Justin,

Getting the balance right between our ego and higher minds can be tricky at first. You have to find the right balance between ignoring it completely and not trying too hard to "make it happen".

Trusting the process and being light about it is what works best. Great post Justin.

~Marcus

Hey Marcus,
I agree with you. It's like cooking bacon almost. If we turn off the heat too soon we have undercooked bacon, too long and it is burned.

It's a skill that can be mastered with practice.

Take Care.

That guest post of yours was also intriguing Justin

Thanks Buddy, I really appreciate that you checked it out and let me know that you read it.
:)

Well Justin,
I would like to be open. Things/thoughts have been changing of late. Maybe, just maybe I have opened the door a little. Fascinating post, thankyou.
be good to yourself
David

David, Thank you so much for being open and honest here. I really do appreciate it.

I would definitely advise slowly opening the door in the beginning because it can be overwhelming at first.

Brilliant post Justin,
I liked the unique narration you gave regarding the two minds. Absolutely true. Sometimes, our own ego mind holds us back from taking a new challenge (wrongly interpreting it as a risk).

Thanks Naveen. That is exactly right. All top achievers are able to get beyond the limits of the ego mind and allow higher awareness to get through.

When I started reading your post, it reminded me of a film I recently saw, The Peaceful Warrior. I never read the book, but I recommend the film. If you haven't seen it, it is based on events in the author, Dan Milman's life.

I am an open receiver to higher consciousness, but like many people I can get a bit of a "monkey mind" and my thoughts can run away from me. We are also subject to so much interference on a day to day basis that keeping a clear channel can be challenging.

Great input Wendy. Was Nick Nolte in that movie? Not only do we get interference from the outside but the crappy food, toxic people, and life draining jobs also contribute to making it nearly impossible to connect with the higher mind.

Hello Justin,
You enlighten my mind that i need to lower my ego to give way the higher mind. I do believe by doing this is i need to fully surrender and trust God for everything specially in making a decision, i will let the higher mind to take control. Thanks.

Hey Elpidio. It's not easy at first to get access to the higher mind but with practice and patience it is certainly achievable.

Hi Justin,

Exactly my friend, letting go of the ego is a must. When we do, then the doors of opportunities open for us. For me personally, I use meditation and visualization, and prayers to get to my higher mind. Thanks for sharing

That's right Dia. People think that meditation is all about sitting in the lotus position and closing your eyes.

The truth is that meditating is a great way to get the ego mind to relax so that we can connect with the higher mind and get access to higher awareness.

i believe we all fall in this trap sometimes when we shut down and insist on meeting the Ego's desires, thanks for making us more conscious of what's happening justin :)

Hey Farouk. It makes life easier for us when we know how our body and mind operates.

My goal is to help people achieve their own goals by getting out of their own way.

Hi Justin,

In my opinion, the ego mind is one of fear a d limiting beliefs. It is because of the desire to be safe and protected that the ego mind builds a set of beliefs to keep us safe. I know we all need to live by the higher mind, but this is where the revelation to open our padlocks may be more challenging than just meditation, queit time and so on. Is there a better way to access this higher mind driven living?

Cheers

Hi Jimmy,
Just learn to be still. The ego mind will want you to get up and do something. Just e still, be quiet and make the connection.

You could try reading a book, perhaps something spiritual by Dr Wayne Dyer and be still and see if this works.

Great post Justin.

My door definitely used to be double padlocked shut. These days its opening wider and wider.

I like what you said about the experience of listening up after a couple of drinks. After enlightenment equated to the feeling you get when you're buzzed. Not the stupid part, but the relaxed part. The part that isn't worried or going crazy all the time.

I'm not sure that I'm always using my higher mind, but I know when I meditate I tend to have lots of insights. I suppose that's my higher mind knocking at my door, just gotta learn to let it in more.

The ego mind is very protective and that is why it can be difficult to connect with the higher mind. Trusting is the main way to make the connection.

Hi Justin,

Yesterday I watched "the shift" of Dr Wayne Dyer, where he explains that people can shift to a more purposeful life, wherever they are in life. It seems that to me that this is the same phenomena you talk about here: if you go from ego based living to living from a higher mind. However, he did not tell about the need of following a diet of meditating to 'shift' to this new way of living, but that it just "happens" in e.g. moments where you are a service to others.

thanks for sharing

Hey Marc,
I still haven't seen the Shift yet featuring Dr Wayne Dyer but I will soon. There are ways to create your reality by shifting what is to what you want.

Of course being in a "good vibe place" helps in doing this.

Justin, aloha. Great explanation. This particular sentence of yours is so true:

"Sometimes when life appears to be falling apart it is actually falling together."

Justin, that is so true.

Happily, I have long been open to receiving and almost always follow my guidance without question. As you know, the more you do it, the clearer your receipt of the message becomes.

In fact, I am now to the point where I am very aware of the ego or little me demanding "logic" or explanation
along with, of course, caution, restraint, inaction. recognizing what is happening and understanding it, makes it much easier to go with my guidance.

Thanks so much, Justin, for the clarity of this post on a very important topic.

Best wishes for a terrific weekend. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Aloha Janet. That is so true that the more that we trust and use our intuition the stronger that it becomes and definitely get's easier.

Take Care and enjoy your weekend.
